IBAN, BIC and Sorting Code

Requirements for Euro currency payments within EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland

The International Bank Account Number (IBAN) concept was developed by the European Central Bank (ECB) and by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and is an internationally agreed standard.

What is an IBAN?
Your IBAN is your account number expressed in a standard format to enable your account to be identified in international transactions particularly, but not exclusively, within Europe. 

What is a BIC?
A BIC, or Bank Identifier Code is a universal means of identifying financial institutions in order to facilitate the automated processing of telecommunication messages in the financial environment. What is a Sorting Code?
A Sorting Code is unique six digit number allocated to each bank or building society in the United Kingdom and Ireland to help distinguish between different banks and branches when making GBP payments witin the United Kingdom.

Which countries are affected?
The IBAN and BIC must be quoted for Euro payments to or from any EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. When you ask us to send a Euro payment to an EU member states you will need to provide us with the IBAN of the recipient of the funds and the BIC of the recipient's bank. Therefore you will need to obtain the IBAN and BIC of the person or company you want to pay. Without this information we will be unable to process your payment.

Receiving Euro payments
The sending bank will need your IBAN and BIC to make a payment to your account with AIB Jersey & Isle of Man. Please ensure you provide your IBAN and BIC to the person or company that will be sending you a Euro payment.

Where do I find my IBAN and BIC?
Your IBAN and BIC are printed on your bank statements and fixed term deposit confirmations.

How can I identify an IBAN?
The IBAN in printed format (such as an invoice) is likely to be prefaced by the word IBAN e.g. IBAN GB48AIBK23858401234567.

Internet Payment Instructions, what not to do?
You should NOT enter the word IBAN on any pre-mandated payments.

You should NOT include any spaces when quoting the IBAN. The IBAN should be presented as a continuous string of alphanumeric characters e.g. GB48AIBK23858401234567.
